Thomas H. Cable Obituary

Nov 22, 1935 - Jul 19, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Thomas H. Cable, Jr. November 22, 1935 - July 19, 2016 Thomas H. Cable, Jr., age 80, of Brays Island Plantation, SC, died on July 19, 2016 in Erie, PA surrounded by his loving family, following an accident while on vacation at Lake Chautauqua, NY. Tom was born on November 22, 1935 in Pittsburgh, PA to Ruth Cadwallader Cable and Thomas H. Cable, Sr. He attended Hampton High School and was a 1957 graduate of Bucknell University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He served three years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Germany. In 1962, he married Beverly Wallace in Pittsburgh, PA. They had two children, Graham and Susan. He spent his entire career with Union Carbide Corporation and Praxair, Inc., starting as an engineer and progressing through sales to senior management roles. His career took his family to Houston, TX, New Canaan, CT, and different parts of the world, including three years in Tokyo, Japan and seventeen years in Geneva, Switzerland. After returning to the U.S., he retired as president of the North American gases business in 1995. He and Beverly moved to Brays Island Plantation, SC upon his retirement, where they have lived for the past 20 years. As an avid outdoorsman, Tom enjoyed all the amenities of Brays Island: boating, fishing, shooting, playing golf, and hunting with his beloved English Setters. He was also actively involved in the early growth and governance of Brays Island Plantation. Always involved in his community, he was active in the Tokyo American Club and the American International Club of Geneva, where he served as President. He played an active role in the European Industrial Gases Association. He served on the Boards of The International School of Geneva and Webster University Geneva, and as Senior Warden at Emmanuel Church. Tom and Bev enjoyed their time overseas and took advantage of every opportunity to travel with their family. A highlight from Switzerland was the time spent at their chalet in the ski village of Verbier, which continues to be an important part of their children and grandchildren's lives. As the years went by, there was less skiing for Tom, but he and Bev continued to attend the Verbier Music Festival and Academy every summer with great pleasure. Tom engaged in sporting activities wherever he lived. He continued to be a member of Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, PA. All his life, Tom was a lover of good food and fine wine. His time in Europe allowed him to pursue these interests in depth. A committed oenophile, he joined the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in Burgundy, France. He continued to have an extensive wine cellar and to participate in the Charleston, SC Chapitre of the Confrerie. Tom found joy while working with his hands, and always had ongoing projects, from designing and building a boat in his early twenties, to building a deck on the summer cottage at Lake Chautauqua in his late seventies. A model railroad enthusiast, he spent many years completing an intricate model railroad including European and U.S. trains, filling a room at his Brays Island home. Tom and Bev are members of The First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort, SC. There will be a celebration of Tom's life on Saturday, September 17, 2016, at Brays Island Plantation. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly; his brother, David W. Cable (Jane) of Clyde Hill, WA; his son, Graham (Susan G.) of Gibsonia, PA; his daughter, Susan Cable Gomez (Ben) of Waban, MA; and five grandchildren: Catherine and Claire Cable, and Alex, David and Cristina Gomez. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a cause that was important to Tom: the Coastal Conservation League (www.coastalconservationleague.org) or the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy (www.chautauquawatershed.org). "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." Psalm 121, King James Version
