Thomas J. MullaneyHarrisburgThomas J. Mullaney, 84, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2017 in his home. He was born on April 9, 1933 in Harrisburg to the late Edward R. and Edith J. (Hughes) Mullaney. He is preceded in death by his brother, James R.; and sister, Jane L. Grabuloff.Tom, or "T.J." as he was known to friends and family, is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Dorothy (Potteiger); a son, Tommy; a daughter, Kim (Darrell Ober); and three grandsons, Benjamen, Grant (Kayla) and Matthew. Tom is also survived by many brother and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews.Tom left John Harris High School in 1950, while in the eleventh grade, to join the United States Air Force. After serving four years of active duty, he transferred to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard where he remained in full time status. In 1992, after 42 years of military service, Tom retired as Chief Warrant Officer 2. Tom served with honor and distinction in many duty stations to include 1st Battalion of 104th Calvary, Carlisle; Taylor Air Field in New Kingstown; Capital City Airport, New Cumberland and Ft. Indiantown Gap.Among other awards, Tom received the Soldiers Medal and Pennsylvania Cross of Valor for missions during Hurricane Agnes in 1972, where he and his crew rescued over 70 local citizens. He flew Governors and dignitaries and was well known for his aviation knowledge and expertise. In his spare time, he and a friend built a Bell Helicopter from scratch. Tom also worked part-time for George Wert's Trucking Company in Hogestown.T.J.'s favorite activities were attending his grandsons' sporting events, spending time with his family, and going out for breakfast or lunch with his buddies from the National Guard. His hobbies were woodworking and fixing anything that was broken! A jack of all trades, he was always willing to help neighbors, family and friends. He will be remembered for his generosity, compassion, patience and sense of humor.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 16 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, where there will be a visitation beginning at 1 p.m. Burial with military honors will take place in Longsdorf Cemetery.In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either UCP of Central PA, 55 Utley Drive, Camp Hill, PA 17011, Furry Friends Network, P.O.
