He was born on March 8, 1930 in Bladensburg, Ohio to the late Howard and Vernice (Hauger) Schwartz. Thomas served as a combat engineer in the United States Army. Thomas started his career as a sheet metal craftsman with Owens Corning in Newark before retiring in 1985 as a maintenance supervisor. Thomas was a pilot and a member of the AOPA. With his love for planes and his skill for repairs, Thomas co-founded Schwartz and Ashcraft, a business located at Wynkoop Airport for airframe and power plant maintenance and service. He later moved his business to the Knox County Airport.
Thomas was a member of the Owl Creek Tractor Club and most recently had three of his self-restored tractors driven by his family in the Fredericktown Tomato Show. Although he could fix a plane or restore a tractor, he took most pride in ponytails and making crafts with his grandchildren. Thomas was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
