Tommy L. Smith, 77, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016. Funeral: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in Jacksonville National Cemetery with military honors. A luncheon will follow at
VFW Post 7909 at 6204 Blanding Blvd. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, the family will receive friends at the funeral home. Tommy was born on June 9, 1939, in Fort Worth. He was in the class of '57 of North Side High in Fort Worth. He retired from the U.S. Navy April 1, 1980, after a 23-year career, and then retired from NADEP Jax on Jan. 3, 2003. Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Charles; mother, Mable "May" McMurtrey; brother-in-law, Richard Hamblen; and his aunt, Dorothy, all of the Fort Worth area. Survivors: His wife of 35 years, Connie; two stepsons, Rob Vestel of Jacksonville, Fla., and his five children and a great-granddaughter in the St. Petersburg, Fla., area and Shawn Vestel (Hollie) and their son, Ryan, who was born on Tom's birthday, of Gainesville, Fla.; sister-in-law, Joyce McQueen of Decatur, Ill., and her daughter Sheryl of Peoria, Ill.; a brother, Raymond (Charlet) of Fort Worth and their two sons, two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren; sister, JoAnn Hamblen of Arlington and her two daughters and grandchildren; stepsister, Jackie Haag (Ron) of Missoula, Mont., and their sons and grandchildren; as well as cousins in Texas; and Tommy and Connie's little dog, Bubba.
