Allred, Una M.Dec. 13, 1926 - Dec. 6, 2016Una M. Allred of Sarasota, FL died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 at her home at the age of 88. She was born on Dec. 13, 1926. She was the youngest of six children of James Clarence and Gertrude Allred, all deceased. Having graduated from Milton H.S. in Milton, Indiana in 1944. Una attended nurse's training at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO, where she received her degree in 1948. Returning to Indiana, she worked as a surgical nurse at Reid Memorial Hospital until 1970. Moving to Florida, she then worked as head surgical nurse at Sarasota Memorial Hospital until her retirement. Following retirement, she volunteered for a number of years at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, where she cared for the orchids as well as other species. Una was a skilled Do-It-Yourself-er who enjoyed, among other activities, woodworking, outdoor plants (including her prized Staghorn Fern). She always owned at least one cat, most of them rescue pets. She loved to read, and she worked all of the word puzzles in the Herald-Tribune every day. Una also walked in her neighborhood nearly every day until quite recently, and knew all her neighbors and their pets by name. She loved doing good deeds for others. She is survived by three nephews, Barry Allred and Stephen Allred of Jacksonville, FL, and Pat Allred of Modoc, IN and a niece, Ardra Hartz of Pooler, GA. Great-nieces Jaime Towns, Savannah, GA and Cara Richardson (Lakeland, TN), great-nephews Ryan Allred (Lexington, SC), Jared Hartz (West Bloomfield, MI), Patrick Jay Allred (Modoc, IN) and three great-great nieces as well as 5 great-great nephews. Visitation for local friends will be at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 40 N. Orange Ave, Sarasota, FL on Saturday from 9:30 - 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM on Saturday. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
