VELDA GERLICH, 94 ELIZABETH - Velda Gerlich, age 94, of Elizabeth, IL., died on Friday, October 2, 2014 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth, IL. Velda was born on October 25, 1920, the daughter of Christian and Della (Gugler) Bahr in rural Galena, IL. She attended Galena High School and graduated with the Class of 1937. She married Abraham "Abe" Gerlich on May 28, 1938 in Dubuque, IA. Abe died on November 30, 2004 in Elizabeth. Velda and Abe moved to Elizabeth in 1949. Velda worked in the Extension Office for 10 years and for Jo Carroll Electric for 16 years. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Galena and the Order of the Eastern Star. Velda was also a member of the Homemakers Extension Elizabeth Unit and the Elizabeth Nursing Home Auxiliary. Velda enjoyed cooking, baking, reading, paying cards and writing letters. Velda will be missed by many nieces and nephews, whom she dearly loved. Velda was preceded in death by her husband, Abe; and three sisters, Jean Timpe, Jessie Hartwig, and Beulah Montgomery. Cremation Rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, October 8, 2015 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. A memorial gathering will be held from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., prior to the memorial service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Velda's memory.
