Velma G. Solórzano of Plainview passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016. Family and friends gathered to recite The Holy Rosary on Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at 7 p.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers with visitation to follow. Funeral mass for Velma was to be held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Lubbock. Velma the owner of Solórzano Law Firm was the daughter of migrant workers and worked in the cotton, soybean, onion and sugar cane fields of Texas as a young girl. Dreaming of a better life, she returned to college as an adult and earned her bachelor's degree in business from Wayland Baptist University in 2001, and her MA in Business Administration in 2003. She started Solórzano Business Services in 1993 and was presently still operating her business in Plainview offering bookkeeping and federal and state tax preparation for individuals and small businesses. After completing her master's degree from Wayland, she decided to further her education at Texas Tech University, earning her Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the School of Law. She was a practicing attorney in Texas, focusing her practice on tax and immigration law, including representation before the Federal IRS Courts and Federal Immigration Courts. Mrs. Solórzano also served her community in criminal and family law issues as a proud member of her local bar association boasting of her colleagues' compassion and professionalism. Velma's warrior spirit was surpassed only by her passion for serving those less fortunate, specifically those struggling to attain higher education. She and husband Joel established a scholarship for students who are undergoing hardships and facing obstacles in reaching their educational goals. The Solórzano Scholarship Opportunities for Latinos is the family's way of helping create a brighter future for others. She was preceded in glory by her father, Luciano GonzalesShe is survived by her husband, Joel of Plainview; two sons, Isaias J. Solórzano and wife Crystal of Lubbock and Ezekiel D. Solórzano of Plainview, her mother, Jovita Pando and husband Moises of Lubbock; four sisters, Lucia Gonzales of Greeley CO, Patricia Pando, Beatriz Vilchis and husband Gilberto, and Magdalena Pando and wife Tiffany all of Lubbock, a brother, Moises Pando Jr. and wife Catrina of Odessa, three grandchildren, Joaquin, Alejandro J., and Adalynn G. Solórzano all of Lubbock.
