Velma L. Irons, a longtime resident of Charlotte County, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2018, at her residence in Port Charlotte at the age of 93. Velma loved the Lord and was a proud and devoted member of the Punta Gorda Church of Christ. She exemplified a true Christian woman.
She was born in Florence, Alabama on December 1, 1924, to the late William T. and Olie Hayes. On April 9, 1947, she married her soulmate and the love of her life, W.L. Irons. They were married for 67 wonderful years until his passing in 2014.
In the early part of their marriage, they lived in Miami before relocating to Punta Gorda in 1954 where W. L. started a very successful family construction business. Velma enjoyed being a stay at home mom to her three children and was very involved in all their school activities; as well as, the Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations. She will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity, loving spirit and unwavering love for her family. She was a remarkable woman and will be dearly missed by her loved ones.
Velma is survived by her daughter, Sandra Hartwig; sons, Greg (Linda) Irons, Alan (Donna) Irons; granddaughters, Tammy Patureau, Jill South, Alana (Andrew) Chanza, grandsons A. J. Irons, Zachary (Lexi) Irons, Chris Purdy, Jimmy Hartwig and eleven great-grandchildren, brother-in-law Bobby (Sarah) Irons, sister-in-law Irene Irons, and several beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband W.L. and her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law James C. Hartwig, grandson-in-law Bret South, brother Markham Hayes, sisters Flora Staggs, Mary Lou Richards, Elsie Boe, sister-in-law Grace Wainwright, brother-in-law Lonnie Wainwright, Arlon Staggs, Paul Boe, K. C. Richards, Jones Irons, Harlan Irons, mother-in-law Virgie Irons and father-in-law Tom Irons.
Please join the family to celebrate this wonderful woman's life. Viewing will be Friday, March 9, 2018 from 10am to 11am with services immediately following at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 635 E. Marion Ave Punta Gorda, FL 33950 with a committal service at Indian Spring Cemetery.
