INDEPENDENCE – Vinton E. "Vinnie" VanTasell, 54, of Independence, and formerly of Rowley, died Friday, Nov. 11, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice of Mercy House in Hiawatha.Vinnie was born on Dec. 2, 1961 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Carl V. and Eleanor J. (O'Brian) VanTasell. He was graduate of the Independence High School and went on to become a certified mechanic from Hawkeye Technical College in Waterloo. After becoming certified he spent a year working at the Cadillac Garage in Amarillo, Texas. He later moved back to Iowa and worked for Geater Manufacturing and started farming for his parents in rural Rowley. In early 2011 he moved off the farm to Independence.He enjoyed snowmobiling during the winter, and watching NASCAR events with his friends and family.He is survived by his mother, Eleanor VanTasell, Independence; a sister, Verna Pierce, Cedar Rapids; a nephew, Allen Pierce, Marion; a great nephew, Roman Pierce and a great niece, Ayla Pierce, both of Marion.Vinnie was preceded in death by his father, Carl VanTasell; and a brother-in-law, Michael Pierce.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rowley United Methodist Church, Rowley, with Rev. Susan Higdon officiating. Burial will be held at the Rowley Cemetery.
