Virene Dewhurst passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 21, 2010, at her home with her three children by her side. Virene was born on July 9, 1916, to John F. and Agnes Munighan in Cleveland, Ohio. Virene was the oldest of two girls. In her early years, her family moved to Los Angeles, California, where she graduated from Woodbury University with a degree in Business. While working at an accounting firm in Los Angeles, she met the love of her life, Walter A. Dewhurst. They were married on April 16, 1939, at the Mission in Santa Barbara. They eventually settled in La Jolla where Virene assisted Walter at Dewhurst & Associates, a family construction business which started in 1929.Virene was very active in the La Jolla community. She served as President and volunteered many hours in support of the La Jolla Debutante Ball Committee. She was active in the Stella Maris Academy Club, the Social Service League of La Jolla, the Children's Home Society and the Rotaryannes with the Rotary Club of La Jolla. Virene and Walter were married for 65 years and enjoyed travelling together. She enjoyed flying with Walter as he would pilot small planes across the US. She also spent time enjoying their boats and activities at the San Diego Yacht Club. Walter passed in 2004.Virene is survived by her three children, Don (Lael) Dewhurst, George (Marilyn) Dewhurst, and Patty Dewhurst Coleman; and she leaves 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her sister, Lynne Beler from Medford, Oregon, preceded her in death. Services will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in La Jolla on Monday, August 30th, at 2:00 pm.Those wishing to honor the memory of Virene and assist others who need help, may make donations to San Diego Hospice, 4311 Third Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103.
