Virginia "Gin" Dare Coachman-Smith, 72, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2021. She was born to William James Coachman Sr. and Carrie Mae Grate-Coachman of Pawleys Island, SC who preceeded her in death.
Having been raised in a true "Navy Family" that was stationed all over the world, Virginia followed in her father's footsteps by first enlisting into the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1960's and then transfering into the U.S. Navy where she served until she retired.
Gin, which she was most affectionately called, led an exciting and adventerous life. She liked drag racing cars, and owned an Orange Plymoth Super Bee with a Hurst Shifter. Through her many travels she experienced various cultures and could keep friends and family entertained for hours. Her most memorable duty station was the Naval Air Station in Bermuda where she met and married Herbert Smith. Her second most memorable duty station was Marine Corp Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan. Here she enjoyed camping with family and friends, and exploring the culture with her husband and daughters. She was an active member of the "Red Hats Society"
In Virginia's later years she setteled in Southern California where she lived in Long Beach, Ontario, and finally Chino California. She gave her life to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and Joined Mt. Zion Church of Ontario, CA under the leadership of Dr. Brian E. Kennedy, Sr. where she was an active member of the weekly Senior Bible Study Group, and contributed to the Helping Hands Ministry. She was alos an active member of Community Center Groups in the cities of Ontario and Chino, CA which provided travel and outing events ehich she enjoyed.
Virginia was the mother of two daughters: Chymera Gibson of Fort Mill, SC and Tonya Smith of Lancaster, SC (who preceededher in death December 23, 2020). She is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Adrien Lewis, Ashante Lawrence, Agina Smith, Kianna Lawrence, and Jaycob Watson. Three great-grands: Kieran, Josiah, and Issac. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory three sisters: Marcella, Willis, and Toni and two brothers William Jr., and John, along with a host of cousins and friends.
