Virginia Leota CanadyNewton, IowaVirginia Leota Canady, age 93, passed away on December 8, 2016 at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. She was born on June 23, 1923 in St. James, Minnesota to Walter and Iva Swanson.Virginia grew up on a farm in Minnesota and looked forward to returning for fishing trips. Some of her hobbies and interest included, quilting, sewing, trying new recipes and cooking for family and friends. Virginia was self-employed and began creating memorial flowers in the late 60's and continued up until this day. She loved being able to be creative and making beautiful work for others to treasure. Later, Virginia and her son, David opened JD Crafts Shop together which was located off the square in Newton. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.She is survived by her loving children, Brian (Ruth) Stone, Sandi (Dean) Burgus, David Stone, John (Lisa) Brodersen, and son-in-law, John Flanagan; step-children, Jim Canady, Larry Canady, Carlene Carr, and Linda Burke; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Swanson; and many nieces and nephews.Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Louis; two children, Lloyd Brodersen and Derle Flanagan; and brother, Roger Swanson.Visitation will be held Monday, December 12, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m., at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines. Funeral service will be Tuesday, December 13th at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home followed by burial at Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the family in memory of Virginia.
