Wanta, Virginia P.Virginia P. Wanta, residing at Willow Brooke Point, passed away June 19, 2017 at St. Michael's Hospital, Stevens Point, WI. Virginia, 93, was born on September 23, 1923, in Chicago, Ill, daughter of the late John and Natalie (Piekarz) Penar. At a very young age her family moved to the Stevens Point area and settled on their family farm in the Town of Carson. Virginia attended local schools and graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1941. After graduating from high school, Virginia returned to the Chicago area to live with her cousin who had the same name as hers, Virginia Penar. While attending Northwestern University, she worked delivering telegrams on her bicycle for Western Union in "the Loop" in downtown Chicago. Virginia was married to Alfred Wanta at Camp McCoy, WI. on July 13, 1945. They settled in the Stevens Point area in their home on the Wisconsin River. Virginia worked as an administrative assistant for the Stevens Point School District and then for the Suzuki Institute until her retirement. Her husband, Alfred, preceded her in death on January 1, 1998. Virginia was a very devout Catholic and belonged to several religious organizations. She was a very community minded person and a 20 year volunteer for Hospice. She enjoyed socializing, church picnics and visiting local restaurants, especially for the soup du jour. She loved her family very much, especially the light of her life, her great granddaughter Nichole.Survivors include her children, Gail (Dean) Colrud of Stevens Point, Christopher of Charlotte, N.C., Jacqueline of Scottsdale, Az., grandson Ben (Becky) Colrud of Pardeeville, WI. and a great granddaughter, Nichole Colrud.Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, and all of her siblings and their spouses, Domicele (George) Thorin, Wanda (Phillip) Cass, Henry (Florence) Penar, Evelyn (Frank) Jerzak and Eugene Penar. In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name will be sent to local charities.A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday June 26, 2017 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Millcreek. Rev. Dennis Stanchik officiating. A private family burial will in the Guardian Angel Cemetery, Stevens Point. Family and friends may call from 9:30 A.M. Monday until the service at St. Bartholomew's.
