Virginia Pauline Detjen Brunn died November 23rd, 2016 in Overland Park, KS. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 26th at 2 p.m. at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd. Virginia was born on December 1, 1919, in Kansas City, MO to Fred and Louise Detjen. She graduated from Westport High School and Kansas City Teachers College. She was a beloved kindergarten teacher until she was married. Her family attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church, where she met the love of her life, Sig Brunn. They were married there in 1941 and enjoyed 61 years of marriage in the Kansas City area, until Sig's death. They raised three children - John, Martha, and Rebecca. Virginia did all the bookkeeping when her husband started his general construction company in 1946. Her heart was in her home with her family, where she was a very devoted and involved wife and mother. God gave her the gifts to be the perfect mother to her special needs son. She was always a room mother, a Girl Scout leader, and 4H teacher. She was also a volunteer for the Trinity Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary, and enjoyed teaching Sunday School for many years. Her generous heart and tender soul made her a very loving grandmother to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 1981, Sig and Virginia founded Faith Village - a home for the developmentally delayed, in Olathe, KS. This was a labor of love as they strove to establish a home with dignity, purpose, and love for its residents. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, sister Doris Macdonald, husband, and son John. She is survived by her daughter Martha Ulmer and husband Bob, and daughter Rebecca Matters and husband Spencer, 10 grandchildren and 3 great- grandchildren. She will always be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
