CANASTOTA >> Walter D. Phillips, 84, of 9000 Hazel Ave., Canastota (Oneida Lake), passed away on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at his home, following a lengthy illness, surrounded by his family. He was born on March 9, 1932, in Oneida, a son of the late Leonard and Agnes (Delaney) Phillips.Walt lived in Munnsville most of his life, graduating from Stockbridge Valley Central School in 1950. He has lived on Oneida Lake for the past 10 ½ years. He worked in several positions at Oneida Limited Silversmiths in Sherrill for 44 years, working up to Office Management and retiring in 1994.Walt was a member of the Stockbridge United Methodist Church, a 48 year member of the Munnsville Volunteer Fire Department, Madison County Fire Police, Stockbridge Cemetery Board, Stockbridge School Board of Education, and the Town of Stockbridge Grievance Board.He enjoyed New York Yankees Baseball, Syracuse University Basketball, scenic car rides through the Stockbridge Valley, and spending time with his family.Surviving are: his companion, Betty Mroczek; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Julie Phillips of Oneida, and Tom Phillips and his companion, Bonnie Aldasch, of Munnsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Tamie and Howard March of Munnsville; the mother of his children, Yvonne (Geisler) Phillips of Munnsville; one sister, Betty Gillette of Chittenango; a sister-in-law, Alice Phillips of Sherrill; seven grandchildren, Ben Phillips, Graham Phillips, Matthew Phillips, Kendra Phillips, Kylie Phillips, Nate March, and Kimberly March; one great-granddaughter, Aleiyah Dowsland; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Walt was predeceased by a son, Walter Duane Phillips; two brothers, Wesley Phillips and Harley Phillips; and two sisters, Norma Glynn and Charlotte Strong.The family would like to send a special thank-you to the staff of Home Care Rochester, and special aide, Janine Jones.At Walt's request, private services will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be in Stockbridge Cemetery, Munnsville. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Madison County Office for the Aging, Inc., 138 Dominick Bruno Blvd., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, Stockbridge Cemetery, 6191 Snell Road, Munnsville, N.Y. 13409, or to the Munnsville Volunteer Fire Department, 5210 S.
