Walter Eli MoatsAge: 84 • HintonWalter Eli Moats, age 84, of Hinton, VA, passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at Harrisonburg Health and Rehab in Harrisonburg, VA. He was born on May 14, 1932 in Moyers, WV, the son of the late Jarrett and Dane (Redman) Moats. Mr. Moats attended Moatstown School, he was a member of the North River Baptist Church in Bridgewater, VA, and he retired from Shen Mar Poultry after 25 years of service. He was a Veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict.Mr. Moats is survived by: his companion, Jovita Grogg of Hinton; 2 sisters, Patty Moats and husband Otis of Staunton, VA, Dolly Johnson and husband Thomas of Stuarts Draft, VA; 2 brothers, Leroy Moats of Staunton, and Arthur Moats and wife Willa Mae of Norfolk, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: 3 brothers, Wilbur, Daniel, and Virgil Moats; and 5 sisters, Minnie Moats, Irene Moore, Elizabeth Moore, Mabel Jones, and Louise Kennah.Mr. Moats' family will receive friends on Saturday, March 4, 2017 from Noon until 2:00 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin, WV. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM on Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Thomas Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Jarrett Moats Cemetery in Moatstown, with military honors conducted by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.
