WALTER R. GUSTAFSON (GUS) Gus of Olympia/Lacey, WA passed away on October 16, 2017 at the age of 91. He was born on August 4, 1926 in Spokane, WA to parents, Rose L. and Fire Department Captain Walter F. Gustafson. Gus graduated from North Central High School in Spokane, Washington in 1944. Shortly after graduation, he entered active duty with the
United States Marine Corps. He served with the 3rd Marine Division and fought on Iwo Jima. Gus attended Washington State University after the war and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Psychology. While attend WSU he met his wife Dorothy (Dee) Dimmer who was also attending WSU. They were married on June 12, 1950. In September of 1950, Gus was recalled to the Marines for service in the
Korean War. He was assigned to the First Motor Transport Battalion as a staff officer. After his military service he returned to Spokane, WA, where Gus started his 30 year employment with State Farm Insurance until his retirement in 1982. As a claims adjuster, he moved all over the Northwest and ended up back in Spokane where he managed the Regional Claims Office. Gus and Dee moved to Olympia in 1987 to be closer to their children. In retirement Gus enjoyed traveling the world with his wife, staying physically active and a glass of wine with some Cougar Gold cheese. Gus is survived by his wife Dorothy; son Bruce (Kathy) Gustafson; daughter Jane Montague; 3 granddaughters and 2 great-grandsons. Per Gus's wishes, no service will be held, but a celebration of live will be held, date and location to be announced at a later date.
