WALTER DRYER WELLS II, 84 PORT CONQUITLAM, BC, CANADA - Walter Dryer Wells II, 84, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2014, in Port Moody, BC Canada. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1949. He is survived by his wife, Hildegarde (Deike), class of 1951; sons, Ralph (Lana) of Vancouver, BC, and David of Nelson, BC; brother, Fred (Elli) of Freeport; and grandchildren, Nissa Campbell (Kevin) and Eli Wells. He was born on March 2, 1930, in Oak Park, IL, the son of Violet (Andersen) and Walter D. Wells I, who preceded him in death. The family moved to Freeport during World War II. Violet worked as the public health nurse for Amity Society in the 1940s. Walter went on to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and enlisted in the military during the Korean War. After marrying in Heidelberg in 1953, Walter and Hillie returned to Freeport before moving to Mendocino, CA, in 1961. Walter was active in civil rights, was an early member of the underground press, back-to-the land advocate and an environmentalist. In 1970 the family moved to Nakusp, BC, and subsequently to Silverton, BC, where Walter and Hillie opened Bonanza Creek Gallery. In 2009 they relocated to Port Coquitlam, BC. Walter is remembered as a warm and generous man, a dedicated artist, a deep thinker with strong and not always popular opinions, and an active humanitarian. Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie were his heroes. He is deeply missed by his family and friends. His family requests that any memorial donations be made to the .
