Wanda Edith Simmons, 91, passed away, May 29, 2020, peacefully in her home surrounded by family. She was born to the late Medodias Simmons and Monica Edgil, December 12, 1928, in Jackson, MS. Wanda graduated early from Walker County High School where she held many academic records. She then attended the University of Alabama before moving to Birmingham. She finished her degree in biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Wanda coached volleyball while substituting at Saint Francis School. She is survived by her son, Roger Ray, two daughters Donna Kay and Pamela Berry, her grandchildren Lindsay Pugh, Blake Pugh, Alexis Pritchett, Eddie Pantaleon, Kamille Rhianon, William Navaro, Syierra Neptune, Dakota Earmest, Ashleigh Parker, Logan Williams, and her two great grandchildren Neveah Delgado and Liam Holmes. Wanda was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was an avid tennis player. She loved Alabama football and basketball. She would talk sports to just about everyone she met. Her favorite thing was to watch her children and grandchildren play sports. Ninnie, as her grandkids called her, never missed a game. Wanda was not only her family's number 1 fan, but her children and grandchildren's friends as well. She was the first one in the stands and the last one to leave. Everyone loved her (except maybe the umps/refs and the opposing team). Wanda was passionate in all she did. She carried strength and spunk until the very end. She will be greatly missed.
Due to COVID-19 and the safety and well- being of friends, the family will hold a private, televised service. The family would like to thank all for the prayers and well wishes as they cope with the pain of losing their beloved Wanda Simmons.
