Whayong (Lee) SemerFREMONT: Whayong (Lee) Semer, 88, of Fremont, OH passed away suddenly of a heart attack on Tuesday, November 22. She was born on October 9, 1928, in Seoul, Korea.After graduating from high school and attending college there, she moved to the United States in 1952, living briefly in Tiffin before relocating to Fremont. Whay married Robert (Bob) Semer, a widower with three young children, in 1963.For many, Whayong was known for her running, which she started at age 50. Like her husband, she competed in races all over - including marathons in NYC, Boston, Chicago, and Seoul, Korea. Her personal best marathon time was 3:26 in 1989 at age 61. Whay set and still holds a number of national age-group records in the marathon, 15K, and 10K. She was named "Runner of the Year" for her age group by the "US Track & Field" organization in 1989 and 1994. In 2012, she was inducted into the Fremont Elite Runner's Club Hall of Fame. Along with her husband Bob, she was a partner in downtown Fremont's "Y's Run and Fun" - a clothing and shoe store for runners from 1982-93.Whayong's life was well-lived and well-loved. In addition to becoming a super athlete, she showed her talents through her cooking, her sewing, her artwork along with other hobbies and gifts.She will be sorely missed and is survived by her three children: Scott (Karen) Semer of Fremont; Mark Semer of Columbus; Gail (Joel) Olney of Livermore, CA. Also surviving: six grandchildren (Aaron, Eli, Leah, Kyla, Madison, Dane) and nine great-grandchildren (Racquel, Eliza, Audrey, Joel, Levi, Mia, Jonathon, Emory, Noah); brother Inyong Lee; sisters Boyong Choe and Kumyong Woo; and special niece Patty (Woo) Dhar. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob (2006), her parents, one brother, and two sisters.There will be a private gathering for family and close friends at the home of Scott & Karen Semer on Sunday, December 11 from 1:00-4:00.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to First Presbyterian Church of Fremont, OH, or to the donor's choice.
