Wilbur E. SmithRICHMOND, Ind. - Wilbur E. Smith, 78, of Greeley, Colo., passed away Aug. 4, 2011, at Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado.He was born on Dec. 15, 1932, during a blizzard to Claiborn and Ada (Pitman) Smith at home in Wayne County, Ind. He served for two years in the Army, then married Barbara Sue Vogelgesang on June 17, 1962, at Nettle Creek Friends Church in Hagerstown, Ind. He graduated from Purdue University in agriculture business in 1963. He then spent the next 26 years working for Swift & Co. in management positions across the country. His career ended when he suffered a massive stroke in October 1989. His passions include his grandchildren, playing bridge, creating a beautiful flower-filled yard, and he could fix almost anything. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and neighbor. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Barbara Sue; children, Howard (Judy), Mark, Penny Sue (Ron Ciolkosz) and Eric (Denice); grandchildren, Anthony, Nikki, Kyle, Patrick, Daniel, Collin and Ryan; brothers, Joe and David (Mary Ann); and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, Ada and Claiborn Smith; and brothers, Harold and Forest.Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at Adamson Chapel.Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Northern Colorado, of Colorado or Rocky Mountain Stroke Center, c/o Adamson Funeral & Cremation Services, 2000 47th Ave., Greeley, CO 80634.
