Mr. Wilbur Sutton Jones, 58, of Chester, VA departed this life on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va.
Wilbur was born in Alleghany County, VA and moved to Chester during his childhood. He graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 1979 where he gained a life-long friend, Todd Vance, who was at Wilbur's side during his last days in the hospital. After graduation he held several jobs but his last job as a truck driver for Browning Ferris Industries was by far his favorite. He took pride in his position as a responsible truck driver where he became affectionately known as "Moose". While there Wilbur gained another life-long friend, Roger Scott, who was also by his side during his last days in the hospital. BFI was his last job as he required long-term disability and could no longer work due to his diagnosis of renal cancer in 2003.
He cherished his visits back home to the mountains every Easter with his children to visit family. He always enjoyed giving his children tours of Covington and Alleghany County and showing them his favorite places. He loved the beach also and planned a yearly vacation to the Outer Banks with his children where he enjoyed getting up early to watch the sunrise on the beach.
Wilbur absolutely adored being a Papa to his grandchildren and spent a lot of time with them throughout the years. He also loved his mother and sister dearly as they helped to take care of him during his illnesses the last couple of years when he was unable to drive any longer.
Wilbur was a huge NFL fan of the Washington Redskins and a loyal NASCAR fan of several drivers throughout the years. He also grew fond of having pet dogs later in life and absolutely loved his 15-year-old Chihuahua named Misty, who slept near him every night.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Wright Jones; Beloved Grandmother, Betty Jones; Aunts, Doris Vass, Wanda Jones, Phyllis Crizer, and Louise Jones; and uncles Charles Jones and Buck Jones.
Wilbur is survived by his Mother, Shirley Jones Vinesett; Sister, Cynthia Korb; Children, Tiffany (Brandon), Kenneth (Kay), Timothy, and Chris Slaughter, who Wilbur thought of as his own son; six Grandchildren, James, Gabriella, Tanner, Caleb, Scarlett, and Sullivan; Niece, Kristin Korb; Nephew, Kenneth Korb; Two Aunts, Peggy McDowell and Juanita Ford; numerous cousins; and beloved pet, Misty.
A Memorial Service has been planned for Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 1 PM at Destination Church in Hopewell, VA. In lieu of flowers, please instead consider a donation to any type of charity as Wilbur proudly and anonymously donated every month to various organizations.
