William A. "Popper" Shields, 85, of Bardstown, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at Windsor Gardens of Bardstown. He was born on Oct. 22, 1927, in Washington County to the late M.M. and Alma Sparrow Shields. He was a retired supervisor and lineman for 41 years for Salt River R.E.C.C., a member of Bardstown United Methodist Church for 61 years, an avid fisherman, hunter and a 50 year member of DuVall Masonic Lodge No 6.He was preceded in death by his brother, Manson "Bud" Shields.Survivors include his wife, Louise Sparrow Shields; a daughter, Linda Carole (Alan) Murphy, of Hawesville; two sisters, Ruth Burns, of Chaplin, Shirley Hardin, of Springfield; and two grandchildren, Katie (John) Gorecki, of Bowling Green, and Will Murphy, of Huntington, W.Va.The funeral was 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at Bardstown United Methodist Church with burial in Highview Cemetery in Chaplin. The Rev. Randy Coy and Brother John Poe officiated. The family has requested expressions of sympathy be made to the . Pallbearers were Will Murphy, John Gorecki, Roger Burns, Mike Shields, Larry Richardson, Brian Bare, Bobby Simpson and Ricky Brewer.Honorary pallbearers were Larry Donahue, Jan Hedgepeth, Tommy Fenwick, Billy Marks and Stanley Mudd. Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
