ANGOLA — William Ronald 'Bill' Byrne, 81, of Angola, Indiana, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2016, in Lakeland Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Angola. He was born on Oct. 25, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, to Victor and Florence (Jehle) Byrne. He married Kathy Anderson Lash on Nov. 18, 2006. Bill was an entrepreneur. He also owned and operated Cleveland Homes, Angola. He attended the Orland Nazarene Church. He was a Green Beret in the U.S. Army 10th Special Forces Group and a member of the Orland American Legion Post 423. He received the GI Bill and earned his bachelor's degree from Tri-State University and his master's degree in business from Michigan State University. He served on the Steuben County Sheriff's Department and was a member of the Steuben County Sheriff's Department Merrit Board. He was a member of the BZA and was actively involved in several political campaigns. He was also a private pilot. Surviving are his sons, Dave (Ellen) Byrne of Cleveland, Ohio, Steve (Cindy) Byrne of Angola, James Byrne of Angola and Mike (Nicole) Steele of Pebble Beach, Florida; one stepdaughter, Erica (William) Schwarz of Angola; and four grandchildren, Zachary Steele, Ashley Steele, Abby Byrne and Taylor Byrne. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathy R. Lash Byrne on Dec. 28, 2006; two brothers, Robert Byrne and Richard Byrne; and one sister, Arlene Holderness. Graveside services and burial will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2016, at Greenlawn Cemetery, Orland, Indiana. Officiating will be Roger Strong with military honors by the Orland American Legion Post 423, Angola American Legion Post 31 and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. A celebration of life gathering will be held immediately following the service on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Orland American Legion Post 423, Orland, Indiana.
