William "Bill" ChalkleyJanuary 19, 1940 - March 23, 2015William "Bill" Cary Chalkley, 75, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2015 at a local care center.Bill was born on January 19, 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland to Marvin Cary and Blanche Chalkley. His family moved to California when Bill was four years old. He graduated from La Brea High School at age 17 and enrolled in the Marine Corps. He served 4 years as a corporal as an aviation mechanical specialist. After the service he held various jobs including working for the Santa Fe Railroad and serving as a police officer in California. His sister suggested that Bill come to visit her and her family in Pocatello. He fell in love with the outdoor recreation possibilities and the community. He moved to Pocatello in the 70's. He worked a number of years as an overhead crane operator before deciding to obtain a degree in elementary education. He enjoyed teaching fourth graders at Green Acres School for eleven years. He said that it was the most challenging yet rewarding job that he ever held. After his retirement, Bill took part in many outdoor activities such as cross country skiing, rock climbing, and hiking. He was an active member in NKA. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed plant walks and observing birds. Bill was a very outgoing person who liked being around people and sharing ideas. He will be missed by his many friends and his family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sandy Tatom and both parents. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Diana Chalkley, his son, Thomas Chalkley, his granddaughter, Cassandra Chalkley, 3 half-sisters, a nephew, and two nieces.Bill resided at Ashley Manor the last six months of his life. He received kind and compassionate care from staff. He had a special friendship with Luana. She deserves special thanks for making Bill's last days full of grace and humor. She's truly remarkable. Solace Hospice service also made a great contribution to Bill's comfort and care.
