Gallagher, William EdwardWilliam Edward Gallagher, age 91, of Elmira, NY, passed away November 19th, 2016. He was born on July 3, 1925, the son of the late William G. and Mary Gallagher of Buffalo, NY. William is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Margaret Crossed Gallagher, sisters-in-law Ann C. Ross, Rosemary C. Morris, and Donna C. Layng, brothers-in-law Charles (Kathleen) Crossed, Richard (Carol) Crossed, and William Danaher. Bill was predeceased by his sister Regina Gallagher, mother-in-law Mary Malone Crossed and father-in-law Charles Crossed, brothers-in-law Floyd Ross, Sam Morris, and Tony Layng, and sisters-in-law Tess C. Danaher and Lillian C. DePaul. Bill graduated from South Park High School in Buffalo, NY. He talked often of his early years in Buffalo and cited his usher job in a movie theatre as the springboard for his love of movies. Immediately after high school, Bill was inducted into the U. S. Navy where he served aboard the USS Instill in the Atlantic and Caribbean. After the war ended, Bill moved with his family to Elmira where his father was yards good buyer with Sheehan's Department Store. It was in Elmira that Bill met the love of his life, Peg Crossed. Both were working at the Star Gazette. Peg tells the story of how she noticed Bill one day after work taking the Walnut St. bus to his home on W. Third St. She changed her schedule so she could be on the same bus and found an empty seat next to the tall, handsome man. It was the beginning of a true romance. After their marriage in 1949, the couple moved to Kent, Ohio where Bill completed his education with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at Kent State. Peg continued her writing working as a reporter for the Kent Courier Tribune and the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Peg and Bill returned to Elmira, where both worked at the StarGazette for most of the remainder of their working careers. Over the 50-some years in advertising management and sales, Bill received many awards for his creative advertising endeavors. After retirement from the StarGazette, Bill was the resident historian at the National Soaring Museum in Big Flats. He enjoyed many hobbies, including soaring at Harris Hill as an active glider pilot, bicycling throughout the Northeast, downhill and cross-country skiing, painting, and story telling. He was an enthusiastic history buff and WWII aficionado. Bill is known by many, as the man who played Mark Twain in area plays and presentations. Fondly known as "Uncle Bill" by his many nieces and nephews, he regularly took them to Fair Shake Ice Cream in Pine City where Peg and Bill enjoyed over 60 years of country living on Holden Road. One of Bill's fondest memories was the trip he and Peg took in a converted motorized lifeboat down the Ohio River from East Liverpool, Ohio to the junction of the Mississippi. Their travels included many journeys to Italy, Ireland, Cuba, Mexico, and many islands in the Caribbean. Bill will be remembered, by all those who knew him, as a true gentleman and friend.
