William Eugene DowdenWilliam Eugene Dowden (Bill-"Cat") passed away June 1, 2017. He was born on November 25, 1927, to Elisha and Elizabeth Presley Dowden in Gandy, LA. Bill graduated from Byrd High School and joined the Navy during World War II. He obtained his BS degree from Centenary College, and his Master's degree from Sam Houston State University. He married Gloria Poole on New Year's Eve in 1947. They were married for 69 years.In 1950, they moved to Texas where Bill began his career in Education, coaching football and basketball. He retired as Superintendent of El Campo ISD in 1986.During his 49 years in Texas he served his community in many capacities. He was a member and past President of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Wharton County American Cancer Society, Wharton County Teacher's Credit Union, Region III Educational Service in Victoria, Texas, and the American Legion. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and chaired many committees.Bill is survived by his wife, Gloria Poole Dowden; his children, Cliff Dowden and Lucy, Camille Dowden Holm and Nick, Tim Dowden and Emily; great-grandchildren, Owen and Wyatt, Tom Dowden, Candice Dowden Burgess and Robin Burgess; and great-grandchildren, Isla and Duke. He is also survived by his brothers, Joe Dowden and Charlene and Jack Dowden and Dolly; and other family members he loved dearly.Bill enjoyed a good cocktail, playing his guitar, singing country music, hunting, sports and above all his family.He will be cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
