Mr. William Glenn Roy, Sr., age 95, passed away April 10, 2015. He was born on December 27, 1919, in Coaling, Alabama, to Reverend Edward Lee Roy and Sarah Elizabeth Roy. He lived the past 29 years in Naples, Florida. Roy was preceded in death by his parents as well as three brothers, Frank Roy, Paul Roy and Charles Roy; three sisters: Roberta Roy Merry, Edwina Roy Hammond, and Eunice Roy Dorety. He is survived by his wife Barbara Herberg Roy, Naples, Fl; two daughters, Jan (Jim) Cummings, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl and Lynne Roy, Live Oak, Fl; one son, William Glenn Roy Jr., Altamonte Springs, Fl; four grandchildren Kasey (DR) Cummings Repass, Jacksonville, Fl; Mindy Cummings Nowakowski, Big Sky, Mt.; William G. Roy, III, Altamonte Springs, Fl; Christopher Andrew (Jamie) Roy, Longwood, Fl; five great-grandchildren, James Lee Repass, Robinson Mackay Repass, Ryleigh Cummings Repass; Hunter Joseph Nowakowski; and Tucker James Nowakowski and Camden James Roy. Also Roy is survived by his five stepchildren: Bill (Terri) Herberg, Mike (Chris) Herberg, Jenny Herberg, Cheri Herberg, and Steve Herberg. Bill Roy grew up in Lake City, Florida. At the age of 19, he joined the Navy. Roy served his country in World War II as a Navy Photographer on the carrier, the USS Yorktown, from which he filmed the battle of Midway. After the Yorktown was bombed by Japanese bombers and was listing to its side, the ship was abandoned. Roy and others volunteered to return to the Yorktown to try to salvage it. Once again, the Yorktown was attacked by torpedos and it finally sunk. As a decorated veteran, he continued in the Naval Reserve for 20 years reaching the rank of Lt. Commander. After the war, he returned to Lake City and began his career as a professional photographer, setting up the Bill Roy Studio. He also served as a city commissioner. At this time, he was married to Ruth Lambert Roy. In 1952, he moved the family to Baltimore, MD, to be a film director for the Martin Company, filming test flights of the unmanned missile, the Matador. During this time, he studied to become a lawyer. In 1960, Roy moved the family to Satellite Beach and was a contracts manager for the Gemini, Titan III, and Saturn-Apollo moon programs at Kennedy Space Center during the height of the space programs during the 1960s. Later, he was a corporate attorney for Dow Chemical in Washington DC and Dow's home office in Midland, MI. Our father was well-known for two of his favorite sayings. When he would call you, regardless of the time of day, he would always ask, "So what have you accomplished today?" When you were with him, the first thing in the morning he would want to know was what we were going to do that day. He just felt that life was one big adventure and was ready to explore at home or abroad. Bill will be remembered as an avid conversationalist, world traveler, and humanitarian. Bill and his wife Barbara traveled around the world more than 14 times, visiting over 100 countries, making friends, and helping those in need. He was a great ambassador for our country. Bill spent a week in Havana, Cuba, in December, celebrating his 95th birthday. There will be a memorial service at the Naples United Church of Christ in Naples, Fl. Interment will be in Lake City, Fl, with a graveside service for family and friends on April 20, 2015 at 4 P.M. with Morris Williams officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 P.M. (two hours prior to the graveside services) at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Haven Hospice, 6037 W. US Highway 90, Lake City, Fl 32055. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Dees-Parrish Family Funeral Home, 458 S. Marion Ave, Lake City, FL, 32025. Please sign the online guestbook atparrishfamilyfuneralhome.com.
