William "Big Will" Herrera, 70 of Capitan New Mexico passed away on September 1, 2017 at his home. He was born on April 26, 1947 to Godfrey Jiron Herrera Sr. and Paublita Trujillo Herrera.He is survived by his wife, Socorro Herrera, his daughters Rhonda Newsome, Wanda Lamb and her husband Mike of Ruidoso, his step son Felipe Espinoza. His grandchildren, William "Willie" Herrera, Kathryn Newsome, Gabriel Newsome, Hunter Corona, Marifer Espinoza. His sisters Darlene H. Fresquez and her husband Ricky of Roswell and Lucy H McCasland and her husband John of Roswell. His brother in law Pedro Espinoza. His sister in law Rosa Espinoza His Nephews, Bruce, Kevin, Ricky Jr. Nieces, Natalie, Paula, Carissa, and Cara. Great nephews and nieces, Christian, Brissia, Liana, Kevin Jr., Olivia, Brandon, and Jazmine.He was preceded in death by both his parents, his brother Godfrey Ray Herrera, and his first wife Katherine Herrera.William was a veteran of the United States
Army during the
Vietnam War. He was employed by Pizza Hut for over ten years. He was then employed by and retired from the State of New Mexico Department of Corrections.Willie was known as "The Greatest Tiger" in his hometown of Capitan, holding State and local records in several team sports, a legacy that he was so proud of. His favorite sport was football which he followed from local levels all the way to professional football. His all-time favorite NFL football team was the Pittsburgh Steelers.Willie was very proud of his family and friends and kept a running scrapbook of their accomplishments through newspaper clippings and pictures.William was known and loved by so many family and friends and will be missed dearly by all.Rosary service will be Friday, September 15, at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the funeral mass to follow at 10:30 A.M.Condolences may be sent to the family at
