William J. Scott, Sr., "Bill" to his friends and "Papa" to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully in his home on August 23, 2016, surrounded by his sons. Bill was born on July 3, 1932 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He, and his young bride, Betty, moved to Yuma in 1953 to start his farming business alongside his father who farmed and operated a cattle feed lot, under the Lazy Diamond S brand. Bill farmed cotton and commodity crops for 45 years, and was one of the original members of the cooperative that founded YUCO Gin in 1963. He was one of the best high-yield cotton growers in the area. His favorite tractors were always green. He was an avid supporter of local 4-H and FFA. In 1972 he built an arena, after being prodded by one of his good friends, E.L. McKay. Mack told Bill's son, Chris, that his dad needed to get him a pair of boots, a cowboy hat, a horse, and a place to ride that horse. Thus, Scott's Arena was born. The arena provided a place for local children (and adults) to ride their horses. It became a new home to the West Side Riders. For many years, he enjoyed watching the roping and riding events that took place there. Bill was also a member of the Sheriff's Posse. His support of 4-H, FFA, and anything agriculture or "cowboy" continued throughout his life. Bill enjoyed hunting, camping and riding around in his Jeep. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was generous to all those who knew him and was sure to make you laugh. He will truly be missed. He was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Betty Irene, his parents, William and Geraldine Scott, his sister, Mary Wittwer, his daughters Betsy and Martha, and his granddaughter, Shannon. He is survived by his sister Sandy (Vernon) Ellis, sons William (Vicki-Lynne) Scott, Jr., and Christopher (Londa) Scott, his granddaughters Meghan Scott (Justin Dunaway), Allyson Scott (Luis Holguin), Krystle (James) Mayorga, and Kenzie Scott, and his great grandchildren, Sienna, James, Katherine and Braxton. A special thanks to his caretakers, Margarita, Stephanie and Kristi, who helped comfort and care for him, while treating him like family. His family is so very appreciative of you. A Celebration of Life will be held at his home, 12498 S. Avenue C, on October 1, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. White pocket tees, cowboy hats, and Levis are welcome.
