William R. NewbyMay 2, 1934 - August 26, 2016YorkWilliam Randolph Newby, 82, affectionately known to most as Bill or Newby, passed away early Friday afternoon August 26, 2016, in Mt. Joy. He was the husband of Mary Ellen C. (Rhoades) Newby, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.Bill was born on May 2, 1934, in Baltimore, Md. to the late(s) Straford and Marian (Homely) Newby. He worked at the Yorktowne Hotel, then was hired by Caterpillar Inc. (York plant) before serving in the
Army for 2 years. After the military, he returned to Caterpillar and retired in 1996.In April 2001, Bill started working at the non-profit Crispus Attucks Center of York as a Maintenance Supervisor for the Housing Department for 15 years.Bill started repairing televisions as a hobby. He was known by some as the TV man. He also enjoyed playing cards; watching his grandson Zachary Newby, Jr. play basketball for William Penn Senior High School and Susquehanna University; an avid reader; and he also enjoyed visiting his daughter and son in Greensboro. NC. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kathy Newby of Greensboro, NC; two sons, William Newby Jr. of Greensboro, NC, and Zachary Newby (Jameelah) of York.; 4 grandchildren Shayla, Zachary, Jr., Nicole, and Dyshan Saahir; 3 great-grandchildren, Jacai, Alyssia, and Isabella; a niece and nephews; and a devoted childhood friend, Ronnie Carr of York.Bill was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Newby; James 'Jim Boy' Newby; and his maternal grandmother Anna Gordon.The family of Bill Newby would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the Wellspan Visiting Nurse Association and the staff at the Hospice Community Center in Mt. Joy for all of their care and support.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in memory of William R Newby, Sr. be made to the Crispus Attucks Community Center, 605 S.
