William PattersonGreenvilleWilliam Creigh Patterson, 95, died December 16, 2016 at Rolling Green Village in Greenville, South Carolina. He was born on March 26, 1921 and was the son of the late William Creigh Patterson, Sr. and Mary Dum Patterson. He was the devoted husband for 66 years of his late wife, Nancy Segar Patterson. He was also predeceased by his sisters, Adda Jane Patterson and Mary Elizabeth Patterson Rhinesmith.Dr. Patterson was born in Royalton, PA. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greenville, and a longtime elder in Presbyterian churches in Athens, Georgia and College Park, Maryland. Dr. Patterson earned his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and V.M.D (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Patterson served in the Medical Corps of the US Army during
World War II, including service with the 138th Evacuation Hospital in Germany. His professional career included veterinary practice in Pennsylvania, and thirty-three years with the Agricultural Research Service, U.S.D.A. In addition to active animal disease research, he was involved with the planning, staffing and programming of laboratories in Ames, Iowa, and Athens, Georgia. He helped design the U.S.D.A. Southeast Poultry Research Lab in Athens, and later did research and administrative work at the Russell Research Lab in Athens. As a second career, Dr. Patterson spent twenty years in commercial real estate in Athens, Georgia with Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty.Dr. Patterson was active in the
Rotary Club in Athens, Georgia, serving as President in 1979 and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He also served as President of the University of Georgia Chapter of Sigma Xi (Honorary Research Scientific Society), as well as being active in the United Way.Dr. Patterson is survived by his children William Segar Patterson, Susan Patterson Robbins (James), Steven Creigh Patterson (Joy) and Nancy Patterson Hertha (Douglas). He has eight grandchildren: David Robbins (Marissa), Michael Robbins, and Lauren Robbins Baker (Austin), Matt Patterson (Ginni) and Ben Patterson (Terryn), Ginny Patterson Chellis (the Rev. Rossiter Chellis), Jamie Hertha and Robert Hertha. He has six great-grandchildren: Mary and Will Patterson, Creigh Patterson, James Edward, Gaines and Patterson Chellis. Dr. Patterson was admired for his devotion to God and to his wife, Nancy, and his family. He enjoyed his final years in retirement at Rolling Green Village, where he was a much loved member of the community and well known by the staff and residents. His family is grateful to the staff of Rolling Green Village for their support. They are also thankful to Lutheran Hospice for making his final days comfortable.A memorial service, conducted by The Reverend Dave Sems, will be held at Rolling Green Village, 1 Hoke Smith Blvd., Greenville South Carolina, at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 21, 2017. A graveside ceremony will be held in the spring at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Georgia.
