William C. PolitesMarch 18, 1929 - November 7, 2017EttersWilliam Chew Polites died on November 7, 2017. He was born on March 18, 1929, in Baltimore, MD to Constantine Polites and Amanda (Chew) Polites.Bill graduated from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and was a champion rower with the Arundel Boat Club while in high school. He later graduated from the University of Maryland.Bill served his country as a Marine Corps Second Lieutenant in Korea and as a Captain in the Marine Corps Reserve.Bill owned and operated Hi Hill Gardens for more than 40 years growing flowers for wholesale distribution in major cities and retail sales from his Etters location. His success and longevity in the flower business was attributable to the quality of the flowers he cultivated (even earning national recognition in Life Magazine) as well as the quality of the relationships he cultivated with his customers and employees.Bill enjoyed a very active retirement and his robust health provided him with the time and energy to both dote on his grandchildren and polka dance weekly at many Central Pennsylvania clubs and venues. His bout with cancer was brief but he fought courageously with an indomitable will befitting a Marine.Bill's brevity in speech belied his eloquence in highlighting life's important lessons and moments with a few well-chosen words. Those words of humor, inspiration and comfort are now memories and guideposts for family and friends as they continue through life.Bill is survived and sorely missed by his sons, William, Robert and Mark; grandchildren, Nicole, Bobby, Viktor, Ellen Grace, Kyle and Tess; great-grandchildren, Garrett and Ben; sister, Constance; and nephews, Greg, Chris, William and Don. His older brother, Richard, died in 2015.Remember Bill whenever you see flowers and marvel, as he did, at the beauty and grandeur of God's handiwork.
