William Harrison Sargent, 96, of Anchorage, Alaska, passed away at home on Nov. 23, 2016, due to natural causes.William was born on Feb. 5, 1920, in Greenville, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, participating in the Normandy landing during the D-Day invasion, and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired from the military in 1967, having been honored with two Purple Heart Medals, the Bronze Star for Valor Device and later received the Veteran's Meritorious Award in 2016. After his military career he entered into civil service at Fort Richardson, retiring again in 1982.William has lived in Anchorage since 1965, and was a member of the Alaska Pioneers. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed league bowling and fishing. The family states: "Our dad was devoted to his family. He was humble about his many accomplishments and was always willing to help others whenever he was needed. We are thankful for his life and we will miss his greatly."William is survived by his wife, Kathryn Sargent of Anchorage; son, Michael Sargent of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Dennis DeWinter of Palmer, Alaska; and grandsons, Garret DeWinter of Portland, Ore., and Kyle DeWinter of Palmer.A memorial service will be held at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Arctic Warrior Chapel, Building 3, Headquarters Loop, on Friday, Dec. 2, 2016, at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with full military honors at 2:30 p.m. Those attending the services are invited to gather at the JBER-Richardson Gate (first exit off the Glenn Highway after the Arctic Valley Exit) at 12:45 p.m., to the right of the main gate, behind the funeral hearse for an escort onto the base. Please contact Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home for further instructions. In lieu of flowers, donations in William's honor may be made to the Veteran's Association.
