William St. John Obituary

Dec 19, 1934 - Jan 30, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
William M. "Bill" St. John, 82, of Manzana RD, passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at his home. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 6, 2017 at St. Edward Catholic Church. Father Martin Cordero of San Jose Catholic Church will be the Celebrant. Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery (new section) with Military Honors performed by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. Vigil will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday at West Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. on Thursday. William Murray St. John was born on December 18, 1934 to William Alexander and Flora (Paquette) St. John in Cornwall Ontario, Canada. His family moved to Aitkin, MN, USA on June 4, 1940. He graduated from high school in Minnesota before moving to Carlsbad, NM, along with his family, on July 3, 1954. He served in the US Army prior to attending and graduating from St. Michael's College (College of Santa Fe). William "Bill" and Janet Louise (Harding) St. John were married June 15, 1974 in Carlsbad. Bill was employed by National Potash from 1962 until its closing. He then worked for Carlsbad National Bank from 1983 until his retirement in 1998. During his time at the bank he earned a Degree in Banking from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. Following retirement, Bill went to work for the Jeff Diamond Law Firm where he continued to work. Bill enjoyed working, it gave him the opportunity to meet new people, and as he would say – make new friends. Bill donated many hours to community activities: He is past President of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, past member of Downtown Lions and throughout the years served on the boards of United Way, St. Edward School, Boys and Girls Club and CARC. He also volunteered many hours as a member of the Carlsbad Navy, Cavemen Dads and Carlsbad Soup Kitchen and is a longtime member of B.P.O.E. #1558, St. Edward Catholic Church, Blessed Trinity Council 2719 and Father Collette Assembly 1939 of Knights of Columbus, where he served in leadership positions at local, district and state levels. Bill's passion was children and sports. Known throughout the community as an avid Notre Dame and Carlsbad Cavemen fan, he spent his spare time coaching, promoting and cheering his teams to victory. No matter the score when the time ran out Bill's team's were always the winners, as far as he was concerned. Over the years he coached track, basketball and football for St. Edward's School, umpired Little League Baseball games and broadcast Cavemen Sports via the radio airwaves for so long that nobody can remember when he began. If it involved students and sports you could count on Bill to be present and ready to lend a helping hand. He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Shona St. John, sister Joyce Lawler and brother Kenneth St. John. Bill is survived by his wife Janet, son Bobby St. John, brothers Keith (Charlene) St. John of Houston, TX and Roger (Norma) St. John of Arlington, TX; sisters: Phyllis St. John of Carlsbad, Shirley (Dave) Phelan of Santa Fe, NM and Beverly (Eugene) Stelman of Minneapolis, MN and grandchildren: Sydney and Ryan St. John of Carlsbad; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Brittney's Hope C/O Faith, Love and Hope Foundation 933 N. Canal St. Carlsbad, NM 88220 or a . Condolences may be expressed at westfuneralhomellc.com
