Aug 06, 1939 - Jan 26, 2017

This obituary is administered by:
Zeno Martin, Jr. Bermuda Run Zeno Martin, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Bermuda Run, N.C. on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at the age of 77. He was born on August 5, 1939 to Margaret C. Martin and Zeno Martin, Sr. He attended high school in Raleigh, N.C., and graduated from Wake Forest College in 1960. While at Wake Forest, he played on the men's tennis team, and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society. In addition, he served as basketball statistician for the legendary coach Horace "Bones" McKinney. After graduation, Zeno taught economics at Purdue University and the University of South Carolina. In the 1970's he returned to Wake Forest as the business manager in the Athletic Department. Subsequently he founded Voyager Travel in Winston-Salem where he worked for 20 years until retirement. Zeno's lifetime love of Wake Forest was manifested in his ongoing generosity to the university, and in particular to its athletic programs. A member of the Deacon Club for 37 years, he was also a member of its highest giving level, the Moricle Society, for 13 years, giving the equivalent of a full scholarship to Wake Forest. At various times, he served on the Deacon Club Board of Directors, the Hall of Fame Selection Committee, and the Basketball Executive Committee. In addition, Zeno established three other scholarships: The Zeno Martin College Scholarship Fund, the Zeno Martin Punter/Placekicker Scholarship, and the Zeno Martin Tennis Scholarship Fund. He was proud to sponsor three All-Americans among his group of scholarship recipients. A visible testimony to his generosity to Wake Forest is the Zeno Martin Residence Hall, located in the northwestern quadrant of the campus, and dedicated to the memory of his father. Zeno was well known for his giving heart and his concern for those less fortunate. Among the many recipients of his substantial donations are the Saint Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, the Wounded Warriors Project, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Zeno was predeceased by his parents, Margaret C. and Zeno Martin, Sr. He is survived by his friend, Kenneth S. Halik, whom he mentored and guided, and for whom he acted as a life coach. Ken's husband Juan Vasquez gave special help during the period of illness. Susan Frye and Margaret Poovey were Zeno's longtime friends; Fetica Grandy was his dedicated caregiver for three years. Four cousins also survive him: James Blackburn of Winston-Salem, NC, Steve Blackburn of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, David Blackburn of Houston, TX, and Sherrill Mills of Morehead City, NC. Memorials may be sent to The Deacon Club, Zeno Martin Memorial Gift, 499 Deacon Boulevard, Winston - Salem, NC 27105.
