Bruce E. Caldwell, age 80, a lifelong resident of AuSable died peacefully at home on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013 with his family around him. Bruce was born on May 13, 1933 at the Lockhart family home in AuSable. He graduated from Oscoda High School in 1951. After working a few years with a local plumber, he moved to Flint to take a job at Buick. That is where he met his bride of 55 years, Louis (nee Leahy) from Clio. They married on Nov. 5, 1955. After moving back to AuSable in 1959, he started Bruce Caldwell Plumbing and Heating. In November of 1963, he went to work at Wurtsmith Air Force Base where he worked in civil engineering, first as a plumber and retiring as the deputy chief of operations on June 1, 1993. Bruce was a past member of the AuSable Township Board as well as the Planning Commission, a member of the Rotary Club, Lake Huron Sport fishing Club, Oscoda Yacht Club and Oscoda JC's. He served 13 years as a volunteer for the Oscoda/AuSable Fire Department. Bruce enjoyed studying the Great Lakes freighters, woodworking and fishing. He also loved sharing his knowledge of local and family history. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sadie Caldwell; his wife, Lois; and daughter, Janet. He is survived by son, Bruce Caldwell Jr. of Oscoda, Julie Caldwell of Lakewood, Ohio; grandchildren, Tina Williams (Zach) and Holly Caldwell; and great grandchildren, Elijah, Hannah and Kaleb; and his beloved dog, Bailey. A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oscoda.
