Carol Lynn Schmidt, age 61, of Oscoda died on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 at her home in Oscoda.She was born on Nov. 11, 1948 in Detroit to the late James and Barbara Stein (nee Nixon). Carol became a dental hygienist after attending University of Detroit. She later earned a bachelor's degree in human services from St. Mary's of Orchard Lake. Carol worked as a hygienist for nearly 20 years before pursuing an opportunity as a clinic instructor at Oakland Community College. She and her husband, Ronald, whom she married on April 9, 1987, moved to Oscoda in 1994 from Waterford. Carol was very active with the Iosco County Child Protection Council and the Iosco County Children's Trust Fund where she served as a past secretary and chairperson. She was also the founder of the Baby Pantry in Iosco County which has benefitted numerous children in our area. Carol also had the honor of being named the Michigan Volunteer of the Year by the Michigan Child Protection Council. She enjoyed quilting, reading, cross country skiing, tubing and fishing. In addition to her husband, Ron, Carol is survived by her stepdaughter, Kelly (James) Fish of Troy; stepson, Michael (Suzanne) Schmidt of Oxford; and grandchildren, Katelyn, Jessica, David and Lauren. She is also survived by two sisters and seven brothers. Carol was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30 at Oscoda United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. with Rev. Briony Desotell officiating.
