Donald J. Hellner, age 90, of Oscoda died on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, in Sterling Heights. He was born on July 9, 1921, in Detroit and later graduated from McKenzie High School. He later served in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Coast Guard, in addition to working on the Great Lakes aboard the freighter J. Burton Ayers (currently the Cuyahoga).Donald later worked as an electrician for Ford Motor Company and Detroit Edison for more than 30 years. He was a charter member of the UAW Local 600. Donald moved to the Oscoda/Tawas area in 1990 from Detroit. His family had been vacationing in the area since 1925. Donald was a member of the Oscoda Yacht Club and he enjoyed traveling to the Caribbean. He was an avid baseball fan, player and coach. Donald is survived by his two sons, Mark Hellner and Joseph Hellner, both of Maryland; brother, Bob Hellner; sister, Myrna Chatel; brother-in-law, Art Trowse; and sister-in-law, Elaine Hellner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, in 2000; parents, Benjamin and Marie Hellner (nee Forsyth); brother, Howard Hellner; and sister, Shirley Trowse. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. (instate at 10 a.m.), at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oscoda.
