Eugene J. Licak, age 85, of National City, a former resident of Skidway Lake, died at his home with his family at his side on Friday, April 5, 2013. He was born on Dec. 31, 1927 in Passaic, N.J. Eugene worked as a maintenance supervisor for an apartment complex in Detroit and retired in 1987. Eugene married Phyllis Jakobi on Feb. 16, 2008 at their daughter Connie's home in Sand Lake. He was an avid fishermen and enjoyed playing cards. He loved to have fun and found great fun in teasing and harassing his family or anyone he encountered, Eugene liked to make people smile with his little jokes and nicknames he gave them. He was a member of the Hemlock Road Baptist Church and was a promoter and great supporter of the food pantry at the church, where even while he was sick he made a point to be there and help hand out food with his wife on March 28, 2013. Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; and his children, William (Karen) Cain, Jay (Denice) Utter, Brad Utter, Bob (Linda) Utter, Arnold Jakobi, Connie (Dave) Finley and Ralph Nunn; his grandchildren, Christopher Cain, Brandon and Brittany Utter, Ashley and Jesse Proper, Paul McClaine, Amanda, Anthony and Savannah Utter, Beauford, Jenny and Allison Jakobi, David "Wade," Courtney and Seth Finley; and his great grandson, Jonathan Proper. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Licak; and his first wife, Mary Cain Licak. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 8 at Hemlock Road Baptist Church. Interment followed in Pioneer Cemetery in Grant Township.
