Jean M. DawdyPortlandJean M. Dawdy, age 90, passed away March 19, 2017. She was born on July 30, 1926 in Lansing, MI the daughter of John and Mary (Force) Kortes. Jean was a graduate of Portland High School Class of 1944. After attending Western Michigan University she married Richard Roy Dawdy on December 9, 1945 and were married for 55 years, they raised their four children in Portland. Jean served as the Portland Township Treasurer for several years. Upon Dick's retirement from TRW, they divided their time between the summer cottage on Rainbow Lake, Trufant, MI and Bonita Springs, FL. Following Dick's death in 2001, she returned to Portland where she was a member of the First Congregational Church and Life Member of the VFW Post #4090 Women's Auxiliary. Though not a golfer, she had a lifelong love of the game, and was a lifetime member of Portland Country Club. On any given Sunday afternoon she enjoyed watching golf on TV. In addition, Jean loved reading, crossword puzzles, music of the 50's, and spending time with family and friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Richard Roy Jr.; brothers Howard & Russell Kortes, and granddaughter Heather Moore; nephews Tom Kortes and Russ Kortes, Jr.She is survived by her children Steven (Connie) of Portland; Cynthia (David) Hineline of Mays Landing, NJ; Patrick (Bonnie) of Zeeland; and Denise (Tom) Curl of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. She is also survived by sisters-in-law Irene Kortes, Winifred Kortes, and two nieces and a nephew.Memorial services will be conducted by Rev Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will be in Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A luncheon will follow at the V.F.W. Post #4090. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First Congregational Church and Portland VFW Post #4090. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes.
