Dr. John Charles Monnig ("Jack"), age 79, died of a heart attack at Yuma Regional Medical Center on Sunday, June 26, 2011. Jack was born on May 26, 1932 in Anita, Iowa to Justin Tinsely Monnig and Mary Elizabeth Green. Jack received a BA from St. Mary's University in Minnesota, an MA , Educational Administration from St. Thomas University in Minnesota and an Ed.D, Educational Administration from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. Jack was a part of the Christian Brothers Community for 16 years. He married Joan Quigley on June 12, 1971. They have two children. Jack was extremely dedicated to the Catholic education system and spent his career helping to develop and sustain strong Catholic secondary schools in communities across the county. In 1965, Jack's first administrative position was as High School Principal of a 1700 student school in Minneapolis. At the time, he was the youngest high school principal in the State of Minnesota. Jack spent years serving as a consultant helping to develop and implement the Flexible Modular Scheduling Model in school districts nationwide. He was Assistant Superintendent for five years in a public school district of eight schools in Pennsylvania, and Assistant Superintendent for three years in public school district of 23 schools in Pennsylvania. Over the course of his career, Jack served in the role of Principal in Catholic high schools in Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Delaware, Arizona and California. Jack provided leadership for a new Catholic High School in Yuma and most recently, was Principal for five years at Bishop Alemany High School, the largest diocesan high school in Los Angeles, with 1500 students. Jack loved boating, camping and traveling. He was passionate about helping to train guide dogs and working with the guide dog community. He was an avid volunteer and always put the needs of others before his own. He was a wonderful brother, father, grandfather and friend. Jack is survived by his companion of 14 years, Carolyn Hasty; son Justin Monnig and wife Lisa; daughter Danielle Clark and husband Michael; granddaughters Savannah, Ryan and Keegan and grandson Hayden; brother Dr. Phillip Monnig; sister Mary M. Nagel; and 17 nieces and nephews. Rosary Vigil will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at noon.
