Louis James Pettis Jr.Louis James Pettis Jr., Navy Veteran and Public Servant, made his heavenly transition on April 17, 2017. Louis was born on March 1st, 1930 in Wilmington, N.C. to parents Gladys Walker and Louis Pettis Sr. The family relocated to Detroit in 1937, Louis was educated in the Detroit Public School System where he graduated from Northern High School in 1947, after graduation with the zeal to serve his country he enlisted in The U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War aboard USS Leyte (CV-32) his missions included the evacuation of the 1st Marine Division at Hamhung beachhead; and the invasion of Inchon, Louis later served on the USS Onslow.After serving in the US Navy for 8.5 yrs., Louis used his G.I. Bills to attend Michigan State University where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in Urban Planning. After graduation he went on to work for the Michigan Department of Transportation, he served for 36 years as Public Transport Specialist, Urban Transportation Executive; Supervisor, Manager and Mentor before retiring on December 31, 1995.During his tenure at MDOT, he also served as a literacy mentor at local schools in the Lansing area.Though he loved to serve his community, he also had several interests, he was a sport enthusiast, he enjoyed a good game of basketball, baseball or tennis. Louis had a shared love for music, photography, the theater and traveling.Louis leaves to celebrate his memories two sisters Merle and Matilda, two nieces Kara and Erica and a host of other relatives and close friends.Funeral Service for the late Louis J. Pettis will be held on Saturday April 29th, 2017 at Wilson-Akins Funeral Home located at 17500 Fenkell St, Detroit MI 48227. Family Hour at 11:00am and Service at Noon.
