This obituary is administered by:
Podlich, Margaret Mary 98, of Tempe, AZ passed away on March 16, 2017. Margaret was born on May 29, 1918 in Wichita, Kansas to Clarence John, known as J C Elliott and Olion Pauline Hunt Elliott. They had four children, Ethelyn Mae, Jack, Margaret Mary and Charles. Margaret graduated from Halstead (Kansas) High School in 1936 and received an Associate of Arts degree from Colorado Women's College, in 1939. She taught elementary school in Newton and Burton ( Kansas) from 1938 to 1942. While visiting her aunt in Denver, Colorado in 1942 she met her future husband, William F Podlich, Jr., who was stationed there as an officer in the U S Army Air Corps. They were married on September 1, 1943 and had three children, William F Podlich, III, Margaret Mary (Peg) Podlich and Jan Hunt Podlich. After World War II, the family lived first in Kansas, then Iowa and in 1949 moved to Tempe where Bill joined the faculty at what was then Arizona State College. Margaret was a homemaker and mother, but later returned to college and received a BA in education from Arizona State University in 1961. Afterwards she worked occasionally as a substitute teacher in local valley schools. She continued her lifelong education by reading three newspapers each day, four magazines each month and one book a month. Each morning she did at least four crossword puzzles and even assisted her professor husband while he struggled through his! Her TV fare of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" contributed to her intellectual exercise. She also took great pleasure in watching the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Diamondbacks. In the early 1960's Margaret and her family spent a semester in Mexico as part of a United Nations effort to enhance a local teachers college. In 1967 the family lived in Kabul, Afghanistan, for more than a year. Bill helped develop a UNESCO program at the local teachers college. Margaret delighted in meeting the local people as well as many people from other countries who were participating in the same effort. Afghanistan was an exciting place in the late sixties. The country was modernizing under an enlightened king who was subsequently deposed by a communist insurgency, plunging the country into decades of turmoil. Photos of their time in Afghanistan are at www.pbase.com/qleap/afghan. Margaret and Bill were active at local chapter of the United Nations Association and with the Democratic Party, including the East Valley Breakfast Club. She was thrilled to have voted for the first woman running for President of the United States. For many years she was an active member of the Arizona State Faculty Wives. Margaret was the last surviving member of her Elliott family and was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill and beloved daughter Margaret Mary (Peg). She is survived by her son William and daughter Jan Podlich, son-in law Clayton Esterson, daughter-in-law Patricia, seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She will live on in the loving memory of them all.
