Mary Hardmon Gray, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away on March 25, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication to her family and community.
Born July 4th, 1942 in Newton Mississippi, the daughter of Charlie Marion Chapman and Corener Moore, Mary was raised in Newton alongside her brother, Charlie Marion Chapman Jr. As an adult, she relocated to Belleville, Michigan, where she built a life rooted in hard work and service. A talented hairstylist, Mary took great pride in opening her own hair salon—a testament to her determination and entrepreneurial spirit.
Mary was also deeply involved in her community through her membership in the Elk's Frontier Lodge in Ypsilanti. She served with distinction as Daughter Ruler for several years, reflecting her commitment to leadership and fellowship.
She was a devoted mother to Denise “Shay” Carlisle, Greg Hardmon, and Cheri Hardmon. Her warmth and strength were the foundation of her family. Mary was preceded in death by her brother Charlie and beloved daughter Shay.
She is survived by her son Greg Hardmon, daughter Cheri Hardmon, and grandchildren Cheri Cleveland, Demario Carlisle, Phea Jackson, Shannon Parker, Steven Parker, and Blythe Hardmon. Her legacy continues through several great-grandchildren who will carry forward the love she so generously gave.
Mary’s life was one of resilience, compassion, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
