MaryAnne Bartels, age 68, a lifelong resident of Oscoda, died on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at her home. She was born on Oct. 10, 1943 in Detroit to the late Edward and Mildred Tate. MaryAnne graduated from Oscoda High School in 1961 and later earned her bachelor's degree in music from Michigan State University and her master's degree in education from Central Michigan University. She retired from Oscoda High School after her 34 year of teaching mostly music. She directed numerous plays and musicals in addition to her awarding winning choirs. MaryAnne directed her choirs at several amazing venues, including the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., the United Nations building, on the steps of the Capitol and at many state competitions. Her choirs earned several national medals along with countless top ratings at the state level. MaryAnne brought an excitement and love for music to so many students during her career and they will forever be indebted. She was a member of the Rotary Club, the Lioness Club and she started Downtown Beautification which helped her express her pride in her community. MaryAnne earned the Citizen of the Year award and Lion of the Year in addition to serving as a Grand Marshal. She enjoyed gardening and most especially spend time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Sheryl (Jason) Winchester of Romeo; son, Keith (Kyle) Bartels of Richmond; grandchildren, Chloe, Kosette, Kolten and Kinsley; brother, Terry (Karen) Tate; niece, Keri Lynn; and nephew, Nathan Tate. A memorial service will be held on a later date. Memorials may be directed to the MaryAnne Bartels Memorial Fund which will benefit the fine arts.
