Jean Roy, 87, passed away on Nov. 21, 2016, at MidMichigan Medical Center. Jean was born on March 12, 1929, to the late John and Lena (Hill) Hoy. On Sept. 5, 1952, she married Henry Thomas Roy and they had 60 wonderful years together before he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 2013.Jean was a native of Charleston, W. Va., and earned her nursing degree cum laude from Alderson-Broaddus College in 1951. She went on to earn her master's degree in sociology in 1960 and an Ed.D. in health education in 1980 from West Virginia University. Jean served on the Alderson-Broaddus nursing faculty from 1957 to 1979 and again from 1987 to 1993, serving as department chair beginning in 1968. Upon her retirement in 1993 she was named Professor of Nursing Emerita.Jean served on a number of professional and community service organizations including the Governor's Advisory Council on comprehensive health planning for West Virginia, the National League for Nursing, and the American Nurses Association. Jean was an integral part in the Renewing the Promise Campaign at Alderson-Broaddus. Her efforts led to thousands of dollars in contributions used to boost nursing scholarships. The Dr. Jean H. Roy Nursing Scholarship was established in 1993 by nursing alumni in honor of her longtime service and commitment to Alderson-Broaddus College.In 2007 she and her husband Tommy Roy received the Apollo Award, granted to those who exemplify stellar achievement through teamwork with particular attention to those who uphold strong personal and family standards. She and her husband were members of the E.J. Willis Society with purpose of fellowship among those who attended Alderson-Broaddus College 50 or more years ago.Jean was a member of the Philippi Baptist Church servicing in various capacities including membership on the Board of Mission, the board of Church Growth and the Building Improvement Committee. While living in Midland she attended Aldersgate Methodist Church. Jean was an avid reader and loved cats. Jean is survived by her son, John (Julanne) Roy; and grandsons, John (Kelly) Roy Jr. and Harrison (Kristin) Roy. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; and sisters, Mildred Freeman and Verna Marie Sheldon.There will be a funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at Aldersgate Methodist Church with Pastor Michael T. Sawicki officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Dr. Jean H.
