Rev. Dr. Ronald E. Shirkey died at home on Sunday, June 10, 2012 in Oscoda.He was born on April 2, 1930 in Flint, the son of Lemuel and Hazel (Carlson) Shirkey. Ron graduated from Beecher High School in Flint in 1948 and Augustana College and Seminary in 1952 and 1956. He also received master's degrees from Northern Michigan University and Princeton University and received his doctorate degree from Drew University.He married Joan Kirk in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in July of 1952. Together, they served congregations in Negaunee, Barrington, R.I., Southgate and Monroe. They retired to Oscoda in 1994. Ron is survived by three children, John of Muskegon, David of Oscoda and Janice of Oscoda; and four beloved grandchildren, Jaden, Daniel, Joseph and Sarah. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan; his son, Paul; and sisters, Dorothy Leach and Elnor Feriend. Cremation has occurred. A service of celebration of life will take place at a later date at Grace Lutheran Church, 401 Main St. East Tawas.
