Susan Carol Whitney (nee Jaehnke), age 56, of East Tawas passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2011, at her home.Susan was born on Dec. 5, 1954, in Beaver Dam, Wis., to Donald and Patricia (nee Klass) Jaehnke. She graduated from the Wisconsin Synod Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., with a bachelor's degree. Susan married her husband, Ed Whitney, on June 26, 1982, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bay City. She went on to become an elementary school
teacher from 1979 to 2008. During that span of years, she taught at Trinity Lutheran School, Bethel Lutheran School and, when she and her husband moved to the Tawas area, she taught at Emanuel Lutheran School. It was during that span of years that Susan and Ed began their family and, when their children were born, Susan took time away from teaching to stay home and help raise her children. She will be always remembered for her love of the Detroit Red Wings and the Detroit Tigers, camping, travel, shopping, chocolate and, most importantly, spending time with her children. Susan was also a very active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tawas City. She is survived by her husband, Ed Whitney of East Tawas; her children, Scott (Lindsay) Whitney of Navarre, Fla., Ben Whitney of East Tawas, Kristen Whitney of East Tawas and Matthew Whitney of Anchorage, Alaska; step-daughters, Sarah (Lea) Chandler of Meridianville, Ala., and Jennifer (Ashley) Carden of Madison, Ala.; her father, Don Jaehnke of Houston, Texas; sisters, Helen (Rich) Heusman of Monroe, Sandy Pollard of Houston, Texas, and Mary (Jeff) Byrnes of Houston, Texas; one brother, Tom Jaehnke of Bedford, Texas; brothers-in-law, Ron (Bonnie) Whitney of Grand Blanc, Dale (Kay) Whitney of East Tawas, Dennis (Linda) Whitney of Davison and Raymond Whitney of Fenton; and sisters-in-law, Carol (Bob) Phinney of Pinconning, Gloria (Chris) Purtell of Pinconning and Ann Marie (Keith) Duckett of Battle Creek. Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Jaehnke. Visitation was held on Saturday and again on Sunday at Buresh Funeral Home in Tawas City. Her funeral services were held on Monday, Jan. 17, at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Tawas City with Pastor Jonathan Schnose officiating. Interment followed in Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Tawas City.
